Keynote speaker Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Nobel prize winner

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chairperson of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on whose behalf he accepted the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, has been announced as keynote speaker for the Heriot-Watt University Industry Day 2013.

He has also been the director general of TERI (The Energy Resources Institute), a research and policy organization in India, and chancellor of TERI University as well as being the chairman of the governing council of the National Agro Foundation (NAF) and is the chairman of the board of Columbia University’s International Research Institute for Climate and Society. Dr Pachauri has been outspoken about climate change. He is now serving as the head of Yale’s Climate and Energy Institute (YCEI).
Event Sessions

This day-long event will focus on sustainability and the issues surrounding Sustainable Development.  Speakers from a range of prominent industrial and governmental authorities will mix with speakers from Heriot-Watt University, giving a rounded perspective.
The day will consist of four parallel sessions, two in the morning and two in the afternoon. Delegates will be asked to pick which two they would like to attend.
The parallel plenary sessions are as follows –

  • Plenary Session 1: Meeting the Hyrdo-Nation and Hyrdo-Neutral Challenge (Morning 10am – 12.30pm)
  • Plenary Session 2: Energy Conservation and Usage In Homes of the Future (Morning 10am – 12.30pm)
  • Plenary Session 3: Materials and Design Technology (Afternoon 2pm – 4.30pm)
  • Plenary Session 4: Networks and Infrastructure (Afternoon 2pm – 4.30pm)

  • Water Conservation – Dr. Lynne Jack, Director of Research, School of the Built Environment, Heriot-Watt University
  • Flooding & Drainage – Prof. Garry Pender, Head of School, School of the Built Environment, Heriot-Watt University
  • Integration of Renewable Technologies – Prof. Hari Upadhyaya, School of Engineering & Physics, Heriot-Watt University
  • Passive Design – Prof. Sue Roaf, School of Built Environment, Heriot-Watt University
  • Energy Demand – Prof. Phil Banfill, Director of Research, School of the Built Environment
  • Modern Construction Materials & Technology – Dr. Alan Forster, School of the Built Environment, Heriot-Watt University
